READER OF THE SPOTLIGHT

PATRICE

It’s that time again… Celebrating our awesome readers. This time I had the pleasure of interviewing the one and only Patrice Harrison… She is the queen of introverts! Some may find that hard to believe, but social media affords her the luxury of being both sociable with the ability to retreat gracefully when she feels things are getting too overwhelming. In addition to being a voracious reading and fledgling blogger, she also make her own bath and body products and run a lil Etsy shop on the side. She also love cats and good conversation. I asked her three things people may not know about her:

  1. Name three things people may not know about you? Well I just revealed I make my own bath and body products, I’m a craft junkie, and at one time, I could play the violin, flute, and clarinet with emphasis being at one time! That’s probably one of my biggest regrets-not keeping up with my instruments…
  2. Outside of reading what do you like to do? Besides reading, I’m a social networking madwoman. I do it for both business and pleasure. I love interacting with people-at my leisure ;). Being the introvert that I am, I keep pretty much to myself with an occasional social outing.
  3. What is your all time favorite book? I refuse to answer this question!
  4. What are you reading right now? At this very moment, I’m reading Quarterback Sneak by Bianca Dean. It’s YA or NA (I still don’t know the difference), and it’s very erotic.
  5. Favorite book you’ve read last year?Check out my top 10 list. I simply cannot choose just one amongst these gems.
  6. Favorite place to read? Hands down in bed! It’s become a nightly ritual even if I read just one or two chapters before lights out, but on the weekends, all bets are off! I’ll sometimes stay up til 3am or later reading.
  7. What makes you love a book? Likeable characters are what make me love a book. Some will argue plot or something else, but if I cannot connect with or relate to the main characters on some level, then it’s a wrap. I want someone I can root for or admire or fall in love with (Yes, I have several book boos. Don’t judge me.)
  8. What will inspire you to recommend a book? I will recommend a book based again on likeable characters, well-written, fully-executed plot, and/or one that just gets me in the feels-that leaves me up at night savoring what I’ve just read. Or, I’ll simply recommend it because it’s written by an author I really love.
  9. Favorite genre? My favorite genre is interracial romance. I used to really love historical IR romance, but my game has now shifted to YA/NA and MC (motorcycle club) romances. I still read a few AA titles, but only by authors whose work I know and love.
  10. Do you have a reading snack? I’ve been known to eat full course meals while reading my Kindle, but to answer your question, my favorite snack is usually something salty and/or crunchy.
  11. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews? I don’t have a problem at all giving bad or negative reviews because I know that I back up my claims by citing references or giving insight as to why I felt the need to rate a book so poorly. Do I revel in it? Of course not, but I believe in giving honest feedback at all times even at the risk of being alienated or ridiculed. I don’t think it does an author any good to spare their feelings when the work was not very good, but I’m also not one of those cruel reviewers who attack the author’s intelligence either. I think that is so foul.
  12. How many books do you usually read in a month? I usually read 10 or more depending on the length, but now that I’ve delved into blogging and promoting, that number has probably dropped to about 5-7. I used to not love short stories at all, but given my busy schedule now, I seek them out just to get a fix lol. And by short stories, I mean at least 50-75 pages. I try to read at least one novel-length story a week.
  13. The longest you’ve gone without reading? One day. I’m so pitiful lol, but I’m very passionate about my reading.
  14. What would cause you to stop reading a book halfway through?Horrible plot or just a woman who acts so unbelievably, incredibly stupid or misguided that I can’t continue. Also, anything overtly fetish-y towards black women. Nope, not here for it…
  15. Name a book that made you angry? I plead the fifth, but I’ll share with you privately 😉
  16. If you could be a character in a book, who would it be and why? Oh gosh…I have so many, but let’s take one of your books for example. I would be Jewel O’Neal in Not Always because hunty…I would be all over Jose Martinez! That man had me climbing the walls as I read. And as much as I like to read drama, I don’t want to live it. Jewel and Jose had a few lowkey dramatic moments, but nothing I couldn’t personally handle.
  17. Who are your favorite authors? Again, you put me on the spot, but I’ll make an attempt (in no particular order) It must be noted these are faves because I buy sight unseen: Angelia Menchan Vernon, Sienna Mynx, S.W. Frank, S.K., Lolah Lace, Raven St. Pierre, Mallory Monroe, Ancelli (No, I’m not kissing up. I am in your group after all because I’m a fan duh…), Sherrod Story,Kim Golden.  Please note: There are many, many more. I feel badly for naming just 10 and leaving out so many other great authors that I love. This is not a slight. You know I love you!
  18. Have you ever considered writing a book? Yes I have. What reader hasn’t? I’ve actually written 3 chapters of my “masterpiece” and it’s a masterpiece of crap! I would give it 2 stars if I had to. It’s so cliché and everything I criticize other books for lol. I keep it for posterity, but I think I’ll stick to reading, blogging, and reviewing.
  19. What makes you buy a book? The snippet or summary has to grab me immediately (unless it’s a favorite author, and I just click.) I also have a select group of reading friends whose judgment I trust implicitly, so when they recommend a book, I am almost certain to buy it. I purposely seek out authors or stories that may be lesser known because I really get a thrill when I discover a new author or story. I like claiming “first” lol.

I'm a romance author who believes love is colorblind, but not blinded to injustice. You can't help who you love regardless of their race. Making my words come to life is my passion. Join my couples as they navigate through trials and come out stronger in the end. Love is never easy but it's worth all the hard work.
